How to use Adverse Conditions on your ELD

The holiday season is here and packed with celebrations, family, fun, and cookies…lots of cookies!

But it also can come with treacherous driving conditions that can have a big impact on your drivers and daily operations. Snow, ice, storms, and even fire can put your drivers in a position where their safety and hours-of-service compliance may not be in alignment. How can you help your drivers manage these events in the age of ELD?

EROAD's ELD provides an Adverse Conditions exception within the Driver Profile that can extend the 11 hour driving time limit by two hours should your drivers run into adverse driving conditions, such as mudslides and other abnormal conditions that were unknown at time of dispatch. It’s recommended that carriers update driver profiles in the Depot (EROAD's back office platform) and educate their team before the status is needed so they are prepared well in advance.

HOW TO (DEPOT): In the Depot, click the Driver tab in the red bar and select a driver. Next, scroll down to the list of Permitted Exemptions and Exceptions, and toggle “Adverse Condition” to the on/blue position.

HOW TO (DRIVER): To activate this exception on the in-cab device, the driver taps the counters, taking them to the Hours of Service summary, and click Exemptions. From here they can toggle the exception on, providing them an extra two hours of drive time (driver counter changes from 11 to 13) to allow for the delayed conditions on the road.

Similar to paper logs, the driver will be required to add a description of the conditions. This can easily be done by using the ELD's remarks feature (logs icon, view/edit, remark).
