CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week takes place July 14-20th this year. The program is dedicated to educating drivers and the public about safe driving in an effort to reduce crashes and injuries related to dangerous driving behaviors. According to CVSA, “During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, 16,909 passenger vehicle drivers and 1,908 commercial motor vehicle drivers were issued citations for speeding. In addition, 17 commercial motor vehicle drivers and 714 passenger vehicle drivers were cited for driving too fast for the conditions.” This among many more stats listed on CVSA’s website are the reason CVSA selected speeding as this year’s emphasis. Law enforcement will be on the lookout this week. Drivers speeding and those engaged in unsafe driving behavior will be pulled over and issued a warning or citation.

“Late won’t kill you, speeding will.” – CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week 2019 Slogan

We know speeding can not only get us fines but can be a dangerous activity. In 2017, speeding was a contributing factor in 26 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to NHTSA. That’s 9,717 lives lost due to speeding. When deadlines are tight, drivers may feel pressured to speed to get to the next job.The bottom line should always be safety first. Here are a few ways to make safety top of mind for drivers and continue to grow your safety program.

Focus on safer driving and reduce speeding

  • Proactive speed monitoring – Fleet technology equipped with proactive monitoring tools like the EROAD Overspeed Dashboard can show you the number of speeding events by vehicle or driver over a period of time. For each driver, you can view the areas where they frequently speed and coach them individually.
  • Monitor detention time – Use geofences to identify shippers and receivers that detain drivers for long periods. This can help you adjust schedules or altogether avoid those companies. Less time waiting means more time for your driver to get there safely.
  • Healthy competition – Make driver safety fun. Use a tool like the EROAD Driver Leaderboard, which ranks your drivers, benchmarks their performance against other drivers, and highlights key risk areas. It’s a great way to incentivize and promote healthy competition amongst your drivers to be the safest in your fleet.

Any Safety Stars in your fleet? Nominate them now

At EROAD want to celebrate our safest, most dedicated drivers on the road and encourage fleet managers, dispatchers and safety managers to nominate and share their driver stories with us. Using EROAD and have a stand out driver? Nominate them for the EROAD Safety Star – Driver of the Year. We will be recognizing and appreciating those highest performing drivers during the Driver Appreciation Week, September 8-14, 2019.
