The core element of EROAD’s satellite-based toll system is its secure OBU which can be used to collect road charges based on vehicle distance, location, mass, time and emissions. The OBU sends the required data via a secure cellular link to a back office facility for invoicing.

The EROAD server interfaces with the government transport registry, payment facilities and digital map provider. Security and integrity has been built into the OBU design and web application to protect and secure interfaces and information.

The EROAD system is operational across all New Zealand roads, consisting of 92,000 kms of public roads and an extensive network of private roads.

The OBU (Ehubo):

The EROAD OBU has been approved by the New Zealand government as an electronic replacement for mechanical hubodometers. The OBU reliably measures location, time, and distance travelled with high accuracy, using internal and external sensors including the vehicle speed sensor, GPS satellites and accelerometers. The OBU has been specifically engineered to prevent and detect any attempts to tamper with the device or the sensor inputs. Road trials consistently demonstrate the OBU achieves an accuracy of ±0.5%.
